Spring forward, skip naps
We're still weathering this weekend's early switch to daylight savings time. Combine that with a three-and-a-half-year-old transitioning out of afternoon naps and you're got a recipe for fatigue. And not just his!
Lately, Brett skips naps for a couple of days, then has one, then skips a few more. He napped on Saturday, so I figured with the time change, we'd keep him too busy to nap on Sunday so he could have a good night's sleep.
We were busy all day: a walk by the river and some rock collecting for the new flower bed (not sure if this is allowed so don't tell anyone), out for coffee and treats, some grocery shopping. The plan was to go home and paint our new rocks, have a quick shower, then meet daddy downtown for dinner. We ran into Linda, Brett's babysitter, and her daughter Brittaney at the store, so we invited them over.
We painted rocks and ate snacks on our back deck in the unseasonably warm weather (mid-teens — yay!). Brett was jumping up and down too much to paint — that's how excited he was to have so many of his favourite people in the same place. It confused him too:
Brett: Mommy, I'm all done painting my rocks.
Me: Give me a sec and then we can go get a snack.
Brett: Linda, can we have a snack?
Linda: Well, this is your house. You can ask your mommy!
After they left we had to get changed in a hurry to meet Randy on time. I could tell Brett was tired when he had to lie on my lap to get a clean a shirt on. You guessed it: he fell asleep on the way downtown. Nothing we did roused him. He slept with his head on daddy's lap for the whole meal (Randy tried not to drip anything on him).
He woke up on the way home of course, after two-and-a-half hours. The first thing he said was, "I thought we are going out for dinner?"
